Karnataka Faces Leadership Struggles in Congress, BJP Amid Assembly Session
December 17, 2025
Karnataka's political scene is heating up with leadership fights shaking both Congress and BJP. In Congress, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar met recently to ease tensions before the Assembly's winter session in Belagavi. They discussed a secret power-sharing deal. But the peace cracked when Siddaramaiah's son, MLC Yathindra Siddharamaiah, said his father aims to lead the full term. Both leaders say the party high command will decide the leadership. Several second-tier leaders want quick clarity to avoid harming the government's image ahead of elections, still two and a half years away. Talks about a Cabinet reshuffle add to confusion.
The government struggles with development and spends around ₹60,000 crore yearly on its five major welfare schemes. Meanwhile, BJP's fight inside continues, especially over State chief B.Y. Vijayendra, son of former CM B.S. Yediyurappa. Some BJP leaders oppose Vijayendra's leadership. Senior BJP leader Basannagouda Patil Yatnal was expelled for public criticism. The new national BJP president, Nitin Nabin, is expected to fix these rifts.
In the Assembly session, BJP lacks strong leaders to challenge Congress convincingly. Key BJP figures like Jagadish Shettar and Basavaraj Bommai moved to Parliament. Few BJP leaders remain to fight in the State legislature.
The JD(S), celebrating 25 years, aims to promote Nikhil Kumaraswamy, grandson of former PM H.D. Deve Gowda. With his father mainly busy in New Delhi, the party is reshaping but delaying the naming of a new State president. Some senior leaders feel sidelined as Nikhil, despite three past election losses, gets a fresh political chance. Karnataka politics remains a thrilling arena ahead of elections.
