Hassan Airport Project Drags On, Only ₹5 Crore Spent in Two Years
December 14, 2025
The Hassan airport, 190 km from Bengaluru, has been stuck for over seven decades. Land was acquired starting in 1966, but real construction began only in 2021. Since then, progress has been extremely slow.
In December 2023, Infrastructure Minister M.B. Patil said the project would finish by 2024-25 with a budget of ₹193.65 crore. By then, ₹164.47 crore had been released.
On December 12, 2025, Mr. Patil updated the status again. He said ₹193.6 crore had been released so far, but only ₹169.73 crore spent. That means just about ₹5 crore was used over two years.
The airport plan started in the 1960s, with land acquired in 1966 and 1971, but the work stalled for decades.
In 2007, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda laid the foundation stone. A private firm was hired under a build-own-operate-transfer model. But the firm demanded total land handover and delayed work. The agreement was canceled in 2018 after a change in government.
In 2021, ₹175 crore was allocated again, and construction began with KSIIDC managing the project. Contractor Ibrahim Sharief was hired.
Minister Patil mentioned work on the runway, taxiway, apron, terminal, and control tower is ongoing but did not give a new completion date.
Despite repeated promises, Hassan airport's opening remains uncertain after decades of waiting.
