Drone Strike Kills 6 UN Peacekeepers in Sudan's Kordofan Region
December 14, 2025
A drone strike hit a United Nations peacekeeping logistics base on Saturday in Kadugli city, Kordofan, Sudan. The attack killed six peacekeepers and wounded eight. All victims are Bangladeshi and part of the UN interim security force for Abyei (Unisfa).
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, "Attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law." He called for those responsible for the "unjustifiable" attack to be held accountable.
Sudan's military blamed the strike on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group fighting the army for control. The military said, "The attack clearly reveals the subversive approach of the rebel militia and those behind it." The RSF did not comment. The military posted a video showing thick black smoke over the UN facility.
The Abyei region is oil-rich and disputed between Sudan and South Sudan. The UN has had a mission there since South Sudan's independence in 2011.
Guterres urged an immediate ceasefire in Sudan to enable "a comprehensive, inclusive and Sudanese-owned political process" to end the conflict.
Sudan's conflict began in April 2023 with a power struggle between the military and RSF, leading to fighting in Khartoum and other areas. Over 40,000 people have died, with rights groups saying the real toll is higher. Fighting now focuses on Kordofan, especially after RSF captured El Fasher in Darfur.
The war devastated cities and involved atrocities like mass rape and ethnic killings. The UN and rights groups consider these war crimes and crimes against humanity. The crisis has created the world’s worst humanitarian emergency, pushing parts of Sudan into famine.
