UDF Breaks LDF Stronghold; NDA Gains in Kozhikode Local Body Polls
December 13, 2025
In Kozhikode district local body elections, the United Democratic Front (UDF) made major gains against the Left Democratic Front (LDF), while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) showed strong performance in urban areas. The LDF barely kept control of the 76-member Kozhikode Corporation council with 34 seats, down from a previous two-thirds majority. The UDF improved to 26 seats, and the NDA nearly doubled its tally to 13 seats. Others won three seats. In the 28-member district panchayat, the UDF won 14 divisions, the LDF 13, and the Revolutionary Marxist Party, allied with UDF, took one. The LDF won eight out of 12 block panchayats but lost ground in grama panchayats, securing only 27, compared to UDF's 39. The LDF had dominated many of these areas five years ago but faced setbacks this time. Municipalities remain split: LDF rules Mukkom, Koyilandy, and Vadakara, while UDF leads Ramanattukara, Feroke, Payyoli, and Koduvally. Key LDF leaders like mayoral candidate C.P. Musafar Ahmed lost, reflecting anti-incumbency and local issues. The UDF and BJP capitalized on campaigning related to the Sabarimala gold theft case. Meanwhile, the Welfare Party of India secured four seats independently in Mukkom municipality. Overall, the LDF’s dominance in Kozhikode faces serious challenges after decades.
