UDF Surges Ahead in Kerala Local Body Elections, Beats Left Front in Panchayats
December 13, 2025
The United Democratic Front (UDF) made strong gains in Kerala's local body elections, defeating the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in many areas. The UDF won 505 out of 941 grama panchayats, while the LDF secured 340. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) took 26 grama panchayats, with 'Others' winning six. There was a tie in 64 grama panchayats. This is a big turnaround from 2020, when the LDF won 514 grama panchayats and the UDF had 375.
In Ernakulam, the UDF won 66 grama panchayats, up from 48 in 2020, out of 82 total. It also led in Malappuram with 87 panchayats and performed well in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kasaragod. The LDF won the majority in Kannur with 48 panchayats, and also led in Kollam, Alappuzha, Thrissur, and Palakkad. However, in Thiruvananthapuram, the LDF’s control dropped from 52 to 35 panchayats, and in Alappuzha from 53 to 36. NDA secured six panchayats in Thiruvananthapuram and five in Alappuzha but failed to win any in key districts like Idukki and Malappuram.
For block panchayats, out of 152, the UDF won 79 while the LDF took 63. NDA did not win any block panchayats, with 10 ties reported. UDF dominated in Pathanamthitta with seven out of eight block panchayats, surpassing their 2020 performance. It also led in Ernakulam with 12 of 14 blocks, Idukki with seven of eight, and Kottayam with nine of 11. In Malappuram, a traditional LDF stronghold, UDF captured 14 of 15 blocks. Wayanad’s four blocks also went to UDF. LDF performed well in Kannur and Kozhikode but with fewer wins than in 2020. In Palakkad, Thrissur, Alappuzha, Kollam, and Kasaragod, LDF secured significant block panchayat wins. Thiruvananthapuram saw UDF winning six blocks compared to LDF’s five.
This election marks a clear shift in local power, with UDF gaining ground across Kerala’s local governing bodies.
