Seattle Indian Restaurant Closed After 43 Fall Ill From Thanksgiving Feast
December 13, 2025
An Indian restaurant in Seattle was closed after at least 43 people got sick with stomach upset and diarrhea. The illness followed a 'Fusion Thanksgiving Feast' served around November 28. Customers reported symptoms including diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, headache, and body aches. No restaurant workers fell ill.
King County Public Health inspected the restaurant on December 2. They found no specific food or drink caused the illness but noted symptoms matched bacterial toxins, which grow when food stays too long at room temperature. Officials found the restaurant had problems like not enough equipment or kitchen space to safely prepare the regular and Thanksgiving special dishes.
Cooling methods used may not have lowered food temperatures to safe levels. On a follow-up visit December 4, officials saw food was still cooled improperly. Some items needing refrigeration were left at room temperature. Because these risks could cause sickness, the restaurant was closed until these issues are fixed.
The restaurant discarded unsafe food and began retraining its staff on food safety. King County Public Health stated, “On Dec. 4, we saw that food was still being cooled improperly and that items requiring refrigeration were being kept at room temperature.”
The incident sparked online outrage, with some blaming Americans' low spice tolerance. A statement by Kanishka Cuisine of India, the restaurant, said the problem was only with the special Thanksgiving menu, not their regular dishes. They said they voluntarily contacted the health department after a complaint.
The restaurant added, "Although the lab findings did not show any specific contamination and no food tested positive for any pathogen, we made the decision—together with Public Health—to take every precaution possible. We temporarily closed, discarded all food, completed a full deep cleaning, and began retraining our staff to strengthen our food safety systems before reopening."
