Lagos Transforms into Open-Air Gallery for First Street Art Festival
December 13, 2025
Lagos is now an 'open-air gallery' as the city hosts its first ever street art festival. Organized by Nigerian graffiti artist Osa Okunkpolor, also known as Osa Seven, the event aims to make art part of everyday life. "We believe art shouldn't be confined to galleries and museums," Osa said. The festival runs until December 15 along Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, a busy street in Victoria Island.
Though Lagos is famous for its vibrant arts scene and nightlife, street art is still new here. Local painter Ernest Ibe told AFP, "The visibility is not too strong compared to other African nations. So, it's a challenge, but the country is evolving. We are beginning to understand the impact of social murals and how it affects us socially and in our environment in general."
One highlight is a mural by artist Babalola Oluwafemi, who traveled from Manchester. She said, "I'm just telling how Lagos people love to party, love to go to parties, love to eat food. And they just love to be colourful." Her painting features a peacock, symbolizing beauty and pride.
Artist Ashaolu Oluwafemi described Lagos as a city of joy despite struggles. "There's joy, there's struggle. Even in the mood of your struggles, you have to be joyful. You have to make yourself happy," he told AFP.
Most artists participating are Nigerian, but the festival also welcomes Ottograph from Amsterdam. The lively artworks brighten the streets and invite people to engage with creativity in public spaces.
