The United Democratic Front (UDF) is making a strong comeback in the Kochi Corporation elections after a five-year gap. By noon on December 13, 2025, UDF was leading in 45 out of 76 divisions, well past the needed 39 to control the council. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) was ahead in only 20 divisions, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in six, and independents in five. Of the 38 declared results, UDF won 25 seats, LDF 10, and BJP 3. UDF has matched near its best finish since 2010 when it won 48 seats. The UDF won key divisions such as Fort Kochi, Gandhi Nagar, Palarivattom, and Ernakulam South. LDF held on to divisions including Thevara, Edakochi North, and Palluruthy East. The BJP retained Island North, Ernakulam Central, and Cheralayi seats. Significant upsets included UDF’s former opposition leader Antony Kureethara losing to BJP’s T. Padmakumari in Island North. BJP’s Pravitha Vijayakumar beat independent Shyamala S. Prabhu by 1,593 votes; Ms. Prabhu had resigned from BJP after being denied a ticket. The Congress party took Gandhi Nagar and Vaduthala East, breaking decades-long LDF hold. Other notable wins for UDF were Henry Austin’s narrow victory in Vaduthala East and Nirmala Rajappan winning Gandhi Nagar by just 20 votes. UDF's key leaders M.G. Aristotle and V.K. Minimol also secured seats. Meanwhile, independent K.J. Prakashan, backed by LDF, won Mundamveli East, while his wife trailed in Mundamveli. BJP’s Sunitha Dixon, who recently switched from a UDF ally, was trailing in Ponnurunni East. Initial results favored LDF, but UDF steadily overturned many leads to take control. The election marks a dramatic shift in Kochi's political landscape.
