Nepal’s Antigraft Protests Cost Economy $586 Million; Reconstruction Underway

KATHMANDU: The antigraft protests in September that led to PM KP Sharma Oli’s resignation caused more than $586 million losses to Nepal’s $42 billion economy. The interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s office said a special committee found rebuilding costs will exceed $252 million. The government created a fund to raise money for reconstruction but has collected less than $1 million from the public and institutions so far. Senior engineer Chakrabarti Kantha from the ministry of urban development said rebuilding of Singha Durbar, the president’s house, Supreme Court, and important ministries has begun.
