Urvashi Cinema, one of Bengaluru's largest single-screen theatres, may close after 50 years due to a land dispute. Located near Lalbagh junction, the theatre was famous for its advanced technology and big screen experience. The lease began in 1976 and expired in April 2018. Since then, a legal battle between the theatre owners Sreenivasa Enterprises and landlords has intensified. In February 2024, a civil court ordered the eviction of tenants and rent payments of ₹6.25 lakh per month from 2018. Landlords had demanded ₹25 lakh monthly. Both parties appealed, and on October 13, 2025, the Karnataka High Court ruled that the theatre must vacate and demolish buildings by February 15, 2026. It also set damages at ₹20 lakh per month from 2018 until handover. The Deputy Commissioner cancelled Urvashi’s exhibition license in February 2024, but a court stay allowed screenings to continue. Sreenivasa Enterprises seeks review of the High Court verdict; the plea is under scrutiny. Urvashi Cinema was known for introducing 4K digital projection, Meyer Sound, and 3D glasses, providing an IMAX-like experience. It famously beat multiplexes during the 2009 release of 'Avatar'. It screened many blockbuster films, making it a key cinema for fans who enjoy the old-school movie vibe. If Urvashi closes, it will join Cauvery and Kapali theatres as lost icons of Bengaluru's cinematic history.
