December 12, 2025
A major wildfire broke out in Nagaland's Western Dzukou Valley in Kohima district on Friday, December 12, 2025. A tourist guide first spotted the fire and quickly informed Khonoma village and district officials. Kohima Deputy Commissioner B Henok Buchem issued an urgent order to send a special team for rescue and reconnaissance operations. The team is led by Imliakum, SDO (Civil), Sechü-Zubza. He coordinates with a multi-agency group including police, Home Guards, Forest Department, Disaster Management, Fire & Emergency Services, and the Western Angami Youth Organisation (WAYO). The team must reach the fire site immediately, assess the situation, and use all resources to stop the fire's spread. They are also required to send regular updates for coordination. The Deputy Commissioner said, "The urgency of the situation and the need for swift, coordinated action" is important because Dzukou Valley is a sensitive ecological and popular trekking spot. The fire has spread to the southern side of Kohima district. The District Disaster Management Authority of Kohima is closely monitoring the situation as efforts continue to contain the blaze.
