CCI Probes IndiGo for Breach of Competition Norms After Flight Chaos
December 12, 2025
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is looking into whether IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, broke competition laws. This comes after IndiGo cancelled hundreds of flights beginning December 2, 2025, disrupting travel for thousands. With over 65% domestic market share, IndiGo’s dominance is key to the investigation. A senior CCI official told PTI that they are examining if IndiGo abused its dominant position on certain routes or overall. There is no formal complaint against the airline yet, but CCI started this review on its own. According to the official, the CCI is focused on Section 4 of the Competition Act, which targets abuse of dominance such as excessive pricing or blocking competition. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is also probing the flight disruptions and IndiGo’s operations. Poor planning around new flight duty rules from November 1, 2025, is blamed for the chaos. The CCI will decide if there is enough evidence to open a full probe. If violations are found, the regulator can impose penalties or issue orders to stop unfair business acts. IndiGo’s troubles highlight how market dominance can attract regulatory attention when customer harm occurs. The situation appears to be stabilizing after the flight cancellations.
