A high-level committee has chosen eight people for Central Information Commission (CIC) vacancies, including five from disadvantaged groups. This includes one each from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), minorities, and one woman. The three-member panel that met on December 10, 2025 included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. Gandhi dissented, saying the list lacked SC, ST, OBC, and minority members. But sources clarified that five of the eight selected were from these sections. The CIC was set up in 2005. Sources pointed out that during the UPA government (2005-2014), no SC/ST member or chairperson was appointed. The current NDA government made key appointments, including Suresh Chandra from the ST community in 2018. In 2020, Heeralal Samariya became Information Commissioner, and in 2023, the first SC Chief Information Commissioner. The panel’s work aims to fill eight important posts in the CIC. The balanced choices reflect the government's focus on inclusion in key bodies.
