Kerala’s Gen Z Surprises with Strong Voter Turnout in Local Elections
December 12, 2025
On December 11, 2025, young voters in north Kerala surprised many by showing up in strong numbers for local body elections. Eighteen-year-old Shevez Kevin from Kinassery voted for his father, P.T. Noorudeen, an Independent candidate supported by the Left Democratic Front. “It feels nice, first vote for Vapachi [father],” said Kevin, a college student. For Kevin, voting was more about family and community than politics.
Farhana, 20, a student from Malappuram, also came out to vote despite feeling unsure inside the booth. “I was scared I would get it wrong,” she admitted, but pressed the button with responsibility.
The story was similar in Kannur’s Chirakkal, where 23-year-old Abhishek Ajith travelled all the way from Bengaluru to vote. “Many youngsters are outside Kerala now, studying or working. Many just lose their vote because of it,” he said. “Not everyone comes down just for this. It is time more of us did.”
Ajith also challenged the idea that voting is not "cool." He said, “People keep saying voting is not cool and just does not have the right ‘aura’, but I think involving oneself in decision-making is pretty cool.”
Overall, contrary to popular belief, young voters in Kozhikode and nearby districts stood in queues, asked questions, and took part actively in the democratic process. The Gen Z showed they do care and want to make a difference in their communities.
