Malappuram district recorded a 77.41% voter turnout in civic body elections held on Thursday, December 11. Voting started at 7 a.m. and continued actively all day. Voters still in line after 6 p.m. were allowed to cast their votes. Out of 36.18 lakh voters, 28.01 lakh cast their votes by 8 p.m. Women voters outnumbered men by nearly 2.7 lakh. Of 18.78 lakh women, 15.35 lakh (81.7%) voted, while 12.65 lakh men (72.71%) out of 17.40 lakh voted. Manjeri municipality recorded the highest polling of 82.87% among 12 municipalities. Other top polling municipalities include Malappuram (79.71%) and Tanur (79.27%). Ponnani municipality had the lowest at 73.08%. In the 15 blocks, Areekode led with 82.91%, and Perumpadappu recorded the lowest at 69.31%. Long queues were seen early morning across polling stations. The elections covered 122 civic bodies with 2,789 wards and 8,381 candidates. Voting was held in 4,343 stations, with 295 sensitive booths under live webcast. A large team of 20,848 officials managed the polls. Malappuram used 5,899 control units and 16,172 ballot units. Vote counting will start on Saturday, December 13, at 27 centres, with schools and colleges closed for the event. The polling ran smoothly without major incidents.
