US Seizes Largest Oil Tanker Off Venezuela in Anti-Terrorism Operation
December 11, 2025
A US helicopter and special forces seized a massive oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. US President Donald Trump said it was the "largest one ever seized." The 333-meter-long tanker, named Skipper, is accused of smuggling sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran in support of foreign terrorist groups. US agencies including the Coast Guard and FBI carried out the operation. The tanker reportedly left a Venezuelan port with around 1.8 million barrels of heavy crude oil before the seizure. The US Treasury sanctioned Skipper in 2022 for allegedly helping raise money for Hezbollah and Iran's Revolutionary Guard. The ship was illegally flying Guyana's flag, according to Guyana's Maritime Administration. Trump said the US would keep the seized oil, which could be worth about $95 million at current prices. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil called the seizure "international piracy" accusing Trump of aiming for Venezuela's energy resources. The US has deployed 15,000 troops and warships to the Caribbean as part of its campaign against drug trafficking and to pressure Maduro. This tanker seizure is the latest move in Washington's tough stance against Venezuela's government and alleged criminal networks. It comes amid US allegations that Maduro leads a terrorist cartel linked to narcotics. The US insists it acts legally to stop drug and terror financing from Venezuela.
