US Seizes Largest Oil Tanker Off Venezuela, Trump Says
December 11, 2025
The US has seized a giant oil tanker off Venezuela's coast, President Donald Trump announced. "We have just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela - a large tanker, very large, the largest one ever seized actually," Trump told reporters at the White House.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said the tanker was used to move sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran. A video showed military helicopters and troops boarding the ship during the operation.
Bondi said multiple US agencies worked together, including the FBI, Department of Defense, Homeland Security, and Coast Guard. The tanker, named Skipper, was sanctioned in 2022 for helping terrorist groups like Hezbollah and Iran’s Quds Force.
The USS Gerald Ford aircraft carrier supported the operation, using two helicopters to deploy 10 Coast Guard members, 10 Marines, and special forces.
When asked what would happen to the oil, Trump said, "We keep it, I guess... I assume we're going to keep the oil."
Venezuela condemned the action as "international piracy." Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello called the US "murderers, thieves, pirates" and compared them to high seas criminals.
President Nicolás Maduro, speaking at a rally, told Americans against war, "Don't worry, be happy," quoting a famous 1988 song.
The US accuses Venezuela of drug smuggling into America and has increased military presence nearby, raising fears of possible further actions. Since September, US strikes against drug smugglers in the region have killed at least 80 people.
