At least 22 people died and 16 were injured after two buildings collapsed early Wednesday morning in Fez, Morocco. The four-storey residential buildings housed eight families and were located in the Al Massira suburb, in the new part of the city. State media and local officials reported the buildings showed signs of deterioration for several years. Rescue workers are still searching for anyone trapped under the rubble. Videos show people and diggers working through the debris at night. One clip from news site Akhbarona shows emergency services carrying a body on a stretcher. Nearby residents have been evacuated as a safety measure. The injured taken to hospital have various injuries. Fez is Morocco’s third-largest city and one of the oldest, with parts dating back to the 8th century. The city has seen similar tragedies recently, including a building collapse in May that killed nine and another in February that killed five after heavy rain and strong winds.
