Record 2027 Total Solar Eclipse to Darken Three Continents for Over Six Minutes
December 10, 2025
A rare total solar eclipse will sweep across three continents on August 2, 2027. It will start over the Atlantic Ocean and first touch land in southern Spain and Gibraltar. Then it will cross Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt in North Africa. Finally, it will move to parts of the Middle East like Saudi Arabia and Yemen, and even reach Somalia's coast.
The full eclipse, where the Moon completely covers the Sun, will last the longest near southern Egypt, close to Luxor and Aswan. Here, darkness will last for 6 minutes and 23 seconds. This is the longest total solar eclipse in a century.
NASA explains that the long duration happens because the Moon will be very close to Earth in its orbit, making it look bigger. At the same time, Earth is near its farthest point from the Sun, making the Sun appear smaller. This perfect timing lets the Moon cover the Sun for a longer time.
For comparison, the April 2024 eclipse in North America lasts 4 minutes and 28 seconds, much shorter than the 2027 event. Another eclipse in Spain in 2026 will last just 1 minute and 43 seconds.
During totality, daylight will fade to near darkness for over six minutes. Temperatures may drop quickly, and animals may act as if night has come suddenly. Experts warn to never look directly at the Sun without proper solar filters, except during totality. Local authorities on the eclipse path will share safety tips.
This eclipse is a rare chance to see the glowing solar corona framed around the dark Moon. It will remind many of the similar long eclipse from 1991. Other long eclipses will happen in 2045 and 2096 but will not beat the length of 2027 or 1991.
If you miss this spectacular show, the next similar one will cross the U.S. in 2045. The following very long eclipse after that is expected only in 2114. This 2027 event promises a stunning display of our universe's amazing dance, a sight to remember for years.
