Parliament Panel Halts New Eklavya Schools Till Land Is Secured
December 9, 2025
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment has instructed the Ministry of Tribal Affairs not to approve new Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) until land is secured. On December 9, 2025, the panel reported that more than one-third of the 722 sanctioned schools are yet to become functional because land is not available. Currently, only 477 schools operate, with 341 having their own buildings. The rest run from rented or other government properties.
The committee, led by BJP MP P.C. Mohan, said, “The Committee are therefore of the strong view that in future the proposal of setting up of EMRS from State Governments should be considered by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs only when they ensure beforehand, the availability of land required for the purpose.” They called for urgent government discussion on this issue.
The panel also addressed delays in upgrading older EMRS schools that lack basic facilities such as compound walls, labs, hostels, and staff quarters. It urged the Ministry to provide a clear timeline for these upgrades.
Additionally, the committee criticized the slow progress in building Tribal Freedom Fighters’ Museums, noting only three of the ten planned museums have opened. They demanded the government stick to deadlines to avoid further delays and cost increases.
The committee’s report highlights significant hurdles in fulfilling promises to tribal communities and pushes for faster, more effective implementation of these vital projects.
