The Karnataka Legislative Council witnessed a fiery debate on Tuesday over farmer relief after heavy rains caused severe crop damage. BJP and Congress members clashed sharply. Opposition leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy said the government underestimated the crop loss, claiming 38.71 lakh hectares were affected versus the government's 14.58 lakh hectares. Former Minister C.T. Ravi added that relief was given only for 35,000 out of 85,000 crop loss cases due to wildlife. He also criticized the stoppage of the State’s contributions under the Prime Minister’s Fasal Bima Yojana and highlighted that 2,422 farmers committed suicide in the last two years, with compensation given to only 941 families. Ravi painted a grim picture of agricultural family hardships, saying a matrimonial meet saw 60,000 applications from farmer families, showing social distress. On the other side, Congress leaders including Leader of the House N.S. Boseraju and Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy accused BJP of politicising the matter. They defended the government’s commitment to farmers, accusing BJP of ignoring injustices from the Centre. Congress members also rejected Ravi’s jibe about “MLAs’ procurement centre,” linked to internal party conflicts. The State government is set to respond to the debate on Wednesday.
