Only one voter cast a vote at the Pachakkanam polling station located inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve, a remote area in the state. The booth was set up in an Anganwadi building at Pachakkanam. According to R. Ashok Kumar, assistant returning officer of Kumily panchayat, there are 29 registered voters at this booth. The lone voter, Silvester, 49, came at 9:30 a.m. but could only cast his vote around 12 noon due to a snag in the voting machine. The issue was fixed by 11:30 a.m. Since there was no mobile or internet connectivity, the polling team used a wireless system to communicate. An 11-member team managed the polling process, including presiding officer Biju Thankappan and officers K.V. Sijo, Pradeep Kumar P.N., and Mahin Aboobaker. Mr. Kumar said, "The booth located within the forest points to the inclusive electoral process that extends to the grassroots level in the most remote areas of Pachakkanam." The Pachakkanam booth falls under Mullaperiyar ward of Kumily panchayat. Previously, it was part of Thekkady ward. Voter turnout here is usually low; during the last local body election, only three people voted. The Mullaperiyar ward stretches from Mullaperiyar Lake to Tamil Nadu's border. Polling officials travel 35 km through Vandiperiyar to reach Pachakkanam. Because of threats from wild animals, a rapid response team from the Forest Department protected the polling staff during the process.
