As election fever rises, the Syro-Malabar Church dioceses of Idukki and Kothamangalam step up to voice farmers’ concerns. Over five years, these dioceses have protested issues like wild animal attacks and land disputes affecting farmers. In the 2014 parliamentary polls, Idukki diocese backed Independent candidate Joice George but stayed neutral in later elections, focusing instead on people’s issues. Fr. Jins Karakkatt, media commission director of Idukki diocese, says, "The Church is impartial towards political fronts in the State." He adds, "The political landscape is full of controversies. The media often fail to address the real issues affecting people. Some news channels are even working as a tool for political parties and creating controversies." The Church plans to support local candidates who champion people’s problems. Fr. Karakkatt highlights farmers’ struggles: "The farming community suffers from recurring wild animal attacks and other land issues. We will support those who stand with the farmers and address their concerns." In Kothamangalam, Fr. Jose Kulathur raises alarms about the Forest department. "The Forest department is functioning like a parallel government and is hindering the normal life of people," he says. "Local body leaders can help prevent their ‘illegal’ actions." Fr. Kulathur also points to rising migration due to lack of jobs. "The new generation is moving abroad. In 20 years, many villages may be abandoned. Providing more jobs can stop this." Both dioceses urge candidates to focus on real issues like farmers’ welfare, fair forest policies, and job creation to save their communities in the upcoming polls.
